  • another news story….. (spoiler, death)

    Question:

i just heard on the news that some man set himself on fire this morning and succeeded in killing himself, just a few hours ago and just a few blocks from our house. i just was kinda moved by that, wondering about the guy and what his story was. i hope none of us ever need to do that. it made me feel strange. i felt bad for whoever it was.  :((((((( anna — "blessed am i to dwell in this beautiful temple."

    Response:

Immolation by fire. Just couldn’t take whatever pain he was going through and wanted a way out, even that way. Wonder if he had loved ones. Can’t think of a more painful death.  And no, let’s NOT start a thread on what is the most painful way to die, those of you whose morbidity’s as strong as mine sometimes. Suddenly reminded me of the monks setting themselves on fire as protest in the early stages of Vietnam. One of those indelible news images. But it was somewhere far away, some decades ago. It’s different when it’s so close though.  Hope you’re doing ok. i heard the rest of the story last night on the news…. apparently he walked into a gas station on 11th street, (i live on 11th st. btw) bought a pack of cigarettes, some matches, and a gallon of gas….. he walked a little ways a way, poured the gas on himself, and lit it. at a gas station!!!!! witnesses just stood there aghast apparently… since he wasnt screaming or moving, (they said) they were perplexed and didnt know what to do. finally someone called 911, they took him away and pronounced him dead. no screaming. no moving. scary stuff. at least he was successful i guess. they showed the charred spot on the ground. and at a gas station. phew. and buying the cigarettes? why the pack of cigarettes???? really really spooky. i hope whoever it was found peace. i wish he had found something better first…. anna > Suddenly reminded me of the monks setting themselves on fire as protest in the > early stages of Vietnam.
