Question:

I am curious as to how many bipolar folks are adoptees.  Why because I have asked several friends that are adoptees who have found out that their biological mothers have had mental illnesses and that they themselves have them too. I don’t want to offend anyone.  I am just kinda interested in any findings. As for me—–I am an adoptee with bipolar with a birthmother who has mental issues and depression runs on her side of the family. Please take no offense. Becky

Becky I am also an adoptee with bipolar disorder among other dx’s.  I have no contact with biomom as of yet but am in the process of searching to answer just this question as to whether she has a mental illness Bethj

Good luck in your search.  It is my feeling that alot of adoptees have some type of psych problem——bipolar or borderline. I have just talked to quite a few others that found their birthparents and also found that they had some problems. I know mine sure did. I just am curious if there has ever been a study done on this subject. Take care……

That is very interesting.  I am finding out more and more that adoptees are coming from mothers are have some kind of mental disorder. It is weird. Thanks!!!!

I am not adopted.  My father was clinically depressed and we THINK my grandmother (mothers side) had mania–not depression, just mania. Starting to seem like alot of it does.  Strange or just coincidental? Who knows.
