  • Didn't quit soon enough

    Question:

Jayne,         As hard as the medical problems have been they could have been worse. Often especially with smoking related issues things are somewhat easier and better and survival more often occurs if you have quit before the event.  I know you may find that hard to believe but had you not quit you might not have survived as you did.  Be thankful you are quit and never ever give that back. Jayne, I’m so sorry to hear about your aneurysm. Your recovery period sounds very hopeful though (4 months, right?) My mother had a stroke during surgery to clip her brain aneurysm (before it burst), and she suffered massive brain damage and physical disability.Through intensive therapy (physical, occupational, etc.), she was able to regain speech and most motor control, but cognitively, she’s been badly affected, and she continues to have left side attention deficit. It’s been my experience in helping my mom that creditors are happy to work with you while you recover; it’s an accepted truth that getting disability benefits is a time-consuming process, and your creditors are probably aware of this. Jayne, I know that being ill is awful, esp.  having spent so much time in the hospital, and I really hope your recovery is speedy. Thank god you don’t smoke anymore. My mother *still* does, even after all she’s been through. One last thing: while talking with the docs  at my mother’s rehab (both in- and out-patient), I was told that a major clinical depression following a life-threatening illness is not uncommon. Please take care to monitor your mood closely and seek help if you need it, K? Sending you get well wishes, Carol 3m

Jayne, What’s next? Things are going to get better, and you don’t have to quit smoking. This is exactly where that money the government is getting should go. I don’t know if it helps, but I’m saying a pray or two for you that you don’t lose your house, that you recover quickly, and get back on your feet. Please keep us posted. Jayne, It sounds like a miracle you are alive!  I lost one of my quit buddies, Marvin, to an aneurism….about the tobacco money….you’re absolutely right.  I’ll speak to them, and tell them to send some your way– ;-) Get well soon, Roadkill – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Quit May 28th but that wasn’t soon enough to stop > and aneuryism that burst all over the place in the > ER. Jayne, I don’t know if this will help or not.  When I had my breakdown I lost my job, my mental health, and almost my place of residence.  My first therapist told me something that still remains with me today….. Deb, even if you lost EVERYTHING, you would still have to deal with yourself. My breakdown was the best thing that ever happened to me.  All my life I walked around in fear of losing my job, my apartment, my car, etc.  I had been on my own with no outside assistance since I was 19.  I was still very insecure though. My breakdown was a humbling and enriching experience.  Not at first.  But when I look back I finally realized I had lived through my worst fears.  And also, no matter how tough things got, somehow, I found a solution and kept hanging in there.  Ask out to the universe to help you.  You will get the help you need, if you ask for it.  I am positive about this. Your life is the most important thing right now.  It should always be.  We cannot always control what happens to us.  Someone once told me, in order to get control, one has to let go of the need to control.  A paradox. I don’t know if this helps.  Take what you want and leave the rest.  And ask me for help if you need it with your SSDI.  There is Legal Aid for people in your situation, and I need to tell you that you may need to obtain an attorney to get your disability.  The person who mentioned that had a very good suggestion.  Just let me know if I can be of help.  I’ve handled plenty of litagation as well. {{{{Jayne}}}} I am very sorry to hear about your problems.  I worried I had waited too long to quit, but my recent angiogram showed my heart was healthy.  I was very, very lucky.  But I do know that I would never had paid attention to my symptoms if I had not stopped smoking.  Smokers deserve what they get….right??  You are on the mend and that matters.  A lot. As for your financial worries.  You don’t need them at this point in your recovery.  I don’t know enough about your family situation to give any real advice.  As an attorney, I would recommend you consult one!! Low cost legal advice is available through Legal Services.  Look in the phone book and call them.  They can help or refer you.  They can help with Social Security and with your creditors. Take a deep breath.  You are alive.  You took care of yourself. Let us know how you are doing.  Often.  I will be sending good thoughts your way. sherry OF

Dear Jayne, I am on SSDI.  I know the system real well.  Lost my job, almost ended up on the street while waiting…..been there, understand. I have a wealth of information regarding your dilemna and would be happy to assist you. I have a good friend in Kansas City whose husband came down with a rare and eventually fatal heart disease.  It took him over 4 years to get on SSDI because his illness was not included in this little list the SSDI people use to determine if you are disabled or not. Please feel free to contact me and I’ll assist you all I can. Dear Jayne, I know alot about applying for disability. I am on SSDI.  I also have a tremendous wealth of resouces for people struggling while waiting to get their disability. I have a good friend back in Kansas City whose husband fell ill to a rare and incurable type of heart disease.  Because his disease was so rare, it was not on this special little list that the SSDI people use to determine if you are eligible or not.  It took him over 4 years before his disability kicked in. Please contact me if you need more help.  I would be glad to give you all the knowledge I have regarding the "system"….sorry you are having such a rough time.  Lost my job, almost ended on the street while waiting….  Been there, understand completely. >Doctors  > attribute it to smoking.

But if you were still smoking, no doubt the first thing they would say is "You have to quit."  so at least you can thumb your nose at them if they try that on you.  Rotten luck, hope your health improves quickly and like Suze said, talk to bank, if your credit record is good they’d rather wait a bit so you can keep paying them. A friend of mine had an aneurysm, she did amazingly well after her surgery. Her sister died when hers ruptured without warning, so you seem to be on the winning team. Dawn OF

Oh, Jayne I really hate to hear that!  Please don’t be discouraged with your quit though..it has HAD to of helped, aneuryism or not.  Perhaps had you have still been smoking you would have not lived through the experience.  Perhaps there would have been OTHER health problems in addition to it.  You are only doing yourself good by quitting.  I wish you the quickest recovery possible and al the strength you will need.
