Question:
My husband has the theory that the cause of my recent bout of depression was an incipient cold. I have, if anything, the opposite theory; that the cold arriving literally took my mind off the depression. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Response:
If I understand correctly, you are saying which caused which? I am forever plagued with getting sick, and it always happens when I’m depressed, but I think that I got sick b/c I wasn’t sleeping, so my body wasn’t able to rest like it needed to. Thus, it was prone to getting sick. Alex
Response:
Hi Jackie, I hope that you are feeling better. I don’t know what is true in your particular case. In my own experience, I have had two manic episodes requiring hospitalizations brought on by the flu. Not just a wee cold, but nasty ugly flus. Once it was the combination of several life stressors added to first a two-week bout of the stomach flu followed 5 days later by an extended bout of respiratory flu. BTW, I do not recommend being hospitalized psychotic with the flu, because the nurses don’t believe half of your physical symptoms (attributing your complaints to the psychosis) and so it takes a lot longer to get rid of the flu, and makes recovery from your battiness that much longer as well. I have brought this up with several pdocs, and they have had experience in their practice that influenza CAN (but NOT necessarily will) precipitate episodes. FWIW -Gandalf
