  • Urgent a new virus is out

    Question:

Hi Everyone, Just received a e-mail from a friend of mine in the computer industry and was told about a new virus. Very Important: If you receive an e-mail titled "It takes guts to say Jesus" DO NOT OPEN IT! This message will erase everything on your hard drive. This was announced yesterday from IBM and AOL, this virus is very dangerous and much worse than "Melissa". There is no remedy at this time. Just wanted to inform the ng about this important news flash so noone would crash their system. Take Care, Shadow

Did you confirm this report with a reputable anti virus company before spreading it? Phony virus scares sweep the internet far too often. They are a tremendous waste of bandwidth. Everyone should refuse to help spread unconfirmed rumors. This rumor is patently false. Anyone who knows the least bit about email and virii knows that it is impossible to get a virus by opening email. Opening an attachment is a different story. Another urban legend… Keith – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hi Everyone, >Just received a e-mail from a friend of mine in the computer industry and >was told about a new virus. >Very Important: >If you receive an e-mail titled "It takes guts to say Jesus" DO NOT OPEN IT! >This message will erase everything on your hard drive. >This was announced yesterday from IBM and AOL, this virus is very dangerous >and much worse than "Melissa". >There is no remedy at this time. >Just wanted to inform the ng about this important news flash so noone would >crash their system. >Take Care, >Shadow

Bwaahaahaaahaaa!!!  No probs there!  that’s an insta-delete, heh.  If there’s one thing I hate more than porno spam, it’s religious spam. *So* goddamn pretentious, and annoying (almost, but not quite as annoying as those illiterate Jehovah’s Witnesses who can’t seem to read my "NO SOLICITING" sign at 8:00 on a Saturday morning….GRRRR…) But anyway, thanks for the warning… cindi

This is a HOAX!! One of my friends told me about this supposed virus about a month ago and I found out it’s NOT TRUE.  Just another wild, out-of-control SPAM thingee! It’s no joke — it’s a hoax! It’s just like the old Good Times hoax. For more info, please see: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jesus-hoax.html >Just wanted to inform the NG about this important news flash so no one would >crash their system.

It won’t. You can never get into trouble by merely OPENING an email message or Newsgroup post. Where trouble comes is if you allow a macro or binary executable attachment to run. That can be destructive indeed!!! What can you do? Purchase reliable state-of-the-art antivirus software (I use Norton AntiVirus) and update the virus signatures on a regular basis. Symantec updates their downloadable files on a weekly basis. I strongly suggest that thou go and do likewise. Unless you like living and learning the hard way of course. >Take Care, >Shadow

Here is some information you might find helpfull. If a JW comes to your door, tell them that you are Mormon and say you are going to get your scriptures. The JWs are instructed to run away from a Mormon. We convert too darn many of them. <grin>                Ralph

Oh that was wonderful…i will have to remember that.  My new and only line to battle this lately has been….."Excuse me, Excuse me, EXCUSE ME (sometimes they don’t like to get interuppted).."But did the thought ever occur to you that I was far too busy?"   For some reasons, it really stuns them. I haven’t confirmed this, but a fiend of mine mentioned that JWs aren’t supposed to speak to gays.  So walking between them and the door, closing the door, and then mentioning that you’re gay is supposed to be an effective and deeply satisfying way of dealing. — Followups set, Please go to the relevant newsgroup to carry on discussion, or set the NG field manually if you have something particularly important to say regarding my post.

<snip> }My question is on whether or not it’s ever safe to view attachments.

<snip> Text file (*.txt) attachments are always safe. HTML file (*.htm, *.html) attachments are almost always safe.  As safe as browsing the web.  There are security holes in Java and Javascript that might concern you if you are deeply paranoid.  If you turn off Java and Javascript, then HTML files are IMHO completely safe to view.  There are no known virii that spread through HTML attachments. Word processor documents, such as M$ Word files (*.doc) are dangerous to view if you enable macros.  If you disable macros, then M$ Word files are IMHO completely safe to view.  Another option is getting a M$ Word document viewer that is available off of M$’s website somewhere.  As I hear from NTBugTraq, this has safer macro support that won’t spread virii. Executable files (*.exe, *.com, *.bat) are *NEVER* safe to open.  See below regarding trust.  If you don’t have enough computing knowledge & time to reverse engineer the file, then you can never be sure of them.  (Reverse engineer is a bit of a strong term for (*.bat), but you can get the gist of it, and REing an executable is a tad bit extreme.) If you trust the person who sent you the file, and if you consider that the risk of infection is minimal, then you can probably feel safe opening the attachment.  Though you should be careful and make sure that the writing doesn’t.  If you aren’t sure, send them email, or phone them, or something to ask if they did indeed send you the file.  Virii can still be spread this way, so the other precautions mentioned above, and using a current virus scanner will stop almost all infections. I am a computer security professional, so this is an informed opinion. — Followups set, Please go to the relevant newsgroup to carry on discussion, or set the NG field manually if you have something particularly important to say regarding my post.
